NJ Film Festival February 2020 Preview
The New Jersey Film Festival Spring 2020 will take place from January 25 through February 28. Showcasing new international films, American independent features, experimental and short subjects, classic revivals, and cutting-edge documentaries. Screenings take place on select Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings on the Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Beauty and Ruin
Americana artist David Starr has been on a terrific creative streak in the last five years, releasing several albums that were among the best of each year including Love and Sabotage (2016), The Head and Heart (2017) and South and West (2018).  He’s about to release Beauty and Ruin, an album inspired by a book called Of What Was, Nothing Is Left - the last book written by his grandfather before he died.

REVIEW: "Uncut Gems"
Over their relatively short filmmaking careers, the Safdie brothers (Josh and Benny) have established themselves as the chroniclers du jour of New York street life, employing that city in a way rarely seen since the 1970s. They’ve earned a reputation for mining striking performances from inexperienced actors like Arielle Holmes and Buddy Duress, but recently they’ve begun dropping superstars into their unique mix, with Robert Pattinson leading a largely otherwise amateur cast in their previous film, Good Time.

Lettter from the Publisher: The Drive for One Million
We would like to thank everyone who read and/or shared articles at New Jersey Stage in 2019. Our website and digital magazine had over 430,000 unique visitors in 2019 and we are beginning a major campaign to reach one million unique visitors by the end of 2020.  This will further establish NJ Stage as one of the most powerful media outlets for the arts in the Garden State and you can help us get there.

Strive
When California-based filmmaker Robert Rippberger sought scripts that had entertaining stories of social impact, he whittled over 120 submissions down to a few.  One of the finalists was Strive - a film by Sha-Risse Smith and Piper Dellums about a teenager named Kalani who is trying to go from a Harlem housing project to the Ivy League.

REVIEW: "Portrait Of A Lady On Fire"
The underlying eroticism that can be found in much gothic storytelling comes to the fore in writer / director Céline Sciamma’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire. It’s a gothic romance that holds to its tradition for much of its running time, keeping its passions suppressed before ripping away its bodice for a celebration of forbidden sensual pleasures indulged away from the disapproving eyes of society.

Tribute to Anjelia Pelay
The year began with a major loss to the New Jersey music community when Anjelia Pelay died on January 10 - less than two weeks after turning 34.  Born Angela Marie Chiappelli, she lived in Toms River for most of her life but moved out to California to pursue dreams of music and acting.

Sean Glonek In The Studio
In 2003, I first became aware of the Trenton band The Commons from their wonderful release Come On Get Gone. It would be one of my favorite albums of all-time from a New Jersey band and still holds up well today.  Years after that band broke up, Commons’ guitarist Sean Glonek has become one of the hottest studio guys in the state, working with local artists like Doc Rotten, The Cryptkeeper Five, Honah Lee, and numerous others in addition to being part of national records by Juliana Hatfield and Tanya Donelly.  It’s a second act that led to SRG Studios.

Makin Waves Record Roundup With Candy Cavity, The Weeklings, and Solace
Bob Makin takes a look at the latest releases by Candy Cavity, The Weeklings, and Solace in this month's Makin Waves Record Roundup.

Makin Waves with Robert Randolph: Grammy Guy
Irvington-raised sacred steel guitarist Robert Randolph is nominated for his sixth Grammy Awards, which will take place Jan. 26 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Nominated in the Best Contemporary Blues Album for his “Brighter Days” LP, he is vying for his first win.

Makin Waves' Dirty Jersey Dozen
The Makin Waves Dirty Jersey Dozen are the 12 Garden State original unsigned and extremely independent rock acts who made the most waves in 2019 by touring at least regionally and releasing impactful videos and singles in support of a great, well-received recording released within the past 24 months. They also are most likely to make the most waves in 2020 by remaining the New Jersey music scene’s most creative and productive artists.

Four World Premieres
The new year kicks off with four World Premieres plays taking across the state in January.  NJ Rep in Long Branch presents Bone on Bone, McCarter Theatre in Princeton presents Goodnight Nobody, Luna Stage in West Orange presents American Rookie, and George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick presents Midwives.

Inside The New Jersey Film Festival Spring 2020
(NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ) -- The Rutgers Film Co-op/New Jersey Media Arts Center, in association with the Rutgers University Program In Cinema Studies, presents the New Jersey Film Festival Spring 2020 from January 25 through February 28. Showcasing new international films, American independent features, experimental and short subjects, classic revivals, and cutting-edge documentaries, the festival includes over 35 screenings and more than 40 films will have their New Jersey or Area Premiere (Middlesex County) screenings as part of the New Jersey Film Festival Spring 2020 and the United States Super 8 Film & Digital Video Festival.
